Tombstone, the Poker Revival

Tombstone is a town filled with history and myth. Characters shrouded in history, western lure and memorable stories, thrived in life in Tombstone, Arizona.

According to the city, there is nothing on the books to explain the drop in poker popularity in the city. People like Doc Holliday played daily there at one time. Now there is a movement to revive it.

"Tombstone was a Las Vegas before there was a Las Vegas," says Harold Lee with the Arizona Card League. "Tombstone, as far as I can tell, is the home of poker in this country in a way." The group is driven and enthusiastic about bringing the revival back to the town. "We think that not only does poker belong there, but that poker can do a lot to help that community revive itself," Lee says. The Arizona Card League wants to hold weekend poker expeditions in town. A portion of the money will go towards repairing the old city hall.

It will be an additional way to draw visitors to town. "They could sit around, play cards like Doc Holliday and stuff," says Tombstone resident Stephanie Hamblin. The city says it can't find any law on its books saying poker ever became illegal. "I think it's the Old West and they need to have stuff like that," Hamblin says.

To be a successful poker player you have to be able to exercise good bankroll management skills. If you are unable to manage your poker money correctly, you will never be able to become a long term winning poker player. Even if you were the best player in the world, it would be impossible to be able to make money from poker if you did not use good money management skills.

Bankroll management basically involves playing at a certain levels and buy-ins to help prevent yourself from going broke at the poker table. You have to set yourself limits to where you can play poker due to the variance found in every poker game. There are always going to be times where you have runs of bad luck that you cannot control, and you will lose money due to the bad runs of cards, and not necessarily due to any bad play. Therefore there is no use in putting all of your poker money on one table, because there is a good chance that you will lose it all and not be able to continue playing poker.

As a result, it is important that we have a large enough bankroll to absorb the effects of this variance so that we can continue to play poker even when we have very bad runs of cards. In addition, we don’t want to go over the top and play at micro levels with a huge bankroll because it is unlikely that we will go broke, and we want to give ourselves the opportunity to win a decent amount of money from our poker sessions. Therefore there are useful rules that you can follow to make sure that you give yourself the best opportunity to make money from poker without going broke.

In cash games, you should never put more than 5% of your bankroll onto the table at any time. So if you want to play in $1/$2 cash games and intend to buy in for the full amount, you should have a bankroll of at least $4000. This will then give you enough room to take a few bad beats and losing sessions, but still be able to continue playing poker without the fear of going broke. Another way of looking at the 5% rule is to remember that you should have 20 times the maximum buy in of the level you wish to play at in your bankroll. Most online poker rooms offer a wide range of limits, so it is perfectly possible to keep your bankroll under control, no matter how large or small it might be. Alternatively, if you are a tournament player, you should have around 40 buy-ins minimum for the level of tournaments you wish to play in.

It is important to remember however that bankroll management is only useful if you intend to play poker regularly, and that you are a winning player. If you only play poker casually then it is not as important to have a set bankroll, but to just be careful with your money instead. In addition, bankroll management will have no effect on your moneymaking endeavours if you are a losing poker player. However, bankroll management will slow down the time it takes for you to lose the money if you are used to playing at higher stakes.

Conspiracy to murder over Poker Debt

Two men from Colorado were charged with conspiracy to commit murder for allegedly plotting to use deadly rattlesnakes in an attempt to collect a significant poker debt. According to local law enforcement, Herbert Paul Beck and Christopher Lee were evidently attempting to murder Matthew Sowash, the owner of the Amateur Poker Tour, due to a $60,000 debt.

Investigators on the case were reported as saying Steelman confessed about the plot against Sowash. In the confession he revealed that it was Beck who suggested the use of the snakes in order to kill the would-be victim. It was also disclosed that some discuss was had over the kidnapping of Sowah's children as bargaining chips in retrieving the money. On his part, Beck said that Sowash repeatedly refused to pay him the debt money. The money has been an object of dispute for quite a bit of time. No mention of interest regarding the amount.

The two would be murders finally chose a plan to construct a wooden box then to put the snakes in it. The intention was to make Sowash place his legs in the box with the lid on, not allowing him to pull them out. This creative plan was not carried out. The sensible businessman contacted the Colorado Bureau of Investigation in response to numerous threating emails he had received from the suspects. Beck and Steelman are both well known to police in connection with previous offenses.

World Poker Dealer Championship Rule Changes

Binion's Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada and Poker Player Newspaper have altered the World Poker Dealer Championships rules lifting virtually all limitations on sign-ups. The four events have been changed from a representative tournament to an individual tournament. No longer does a player or owner of a public card room need to be sent on the behalf their location; they may register to play on their own.

Here are the events and the changes:

1 – The Ladies Only Event: $500 buy-in +$50 entry fee - Any woman who works for a public card room, on any level.

Ladies may play in one of the next three events, as qualified. Men may select only one of the next 3 events.

2- The Dealer's Event: $1000 buy-in + $100 entry fee - Anyone who has dealt in a public card room in the last 12 months. Circuit dealers are eligible.

3- The Supervisor's event: $1500 buy-in + $150 entry fee - Any employee except a manager or above, up to and excluding owners. Dual rate employees may decide on either Event No. 2 or No. 3

4- The Manager's and Owner's event: $2000 buy-in + $200 entry fee - Card room managers and above, or owners. Owners are defined as having at least a 5 percent interest or greater, or a member of the tribal council if from a Native American card room.

Everyone who wins a cash prize will be required to show ID proving them to be at least 21 years old. Trophies will be awarded to all individual winners, as well as to the card rooms from where they came with the winners' names inscribed on a permanent trophy to be kept on display at Binion's. Raymond Rahme Busts out in 3rd, WSOP down to Heads Up Play!

The final four WSOP players played for eight hours before Alex Kravchenko finally busted out, swooping up a 4th place WSOP win, however, it took much less time to go from the final three, to heads up WSOP main event final table action!

Eight minutes in fact.

With an ace on the board, Raymond Rahme pushed all of his chips to the middle, Jerry Yang, who has been killing at this years WSOP final table, thought about the decision for a lot longer than many thought necessary, he held ace 5 and did eventually make the call. The turn and river cam blank and Raymond Rahme from South Africa ended his 2008 World Series of Poker adventure taking home just over 3 million dollars.

Be it luck, or be it skill, Jerry Yang has been burning up this years final table since taking his seat, of the 9 original final table contenders, only one of them was not removed by Yang.

The two remaining WSOP Bracelet contenders:

Jerry Yang in the lead with 104,450,000 chips and Tuan Lam with 23,025,000 remaining in WSOP tournament chips.

The final four players remaining at the World Series of Poker main event final table played for more then eight hours before one of them finally busted out. Alex Kravchenko was nothing if not patient, he got his chips in with a monster, big slick, and found himself up against, you'll never guess who, this years final table force, Jerry Yang.

To rub it in, fate layed down a third eight for Yang on the flop. The turn was no help, and left Kravchenko drawing dead at the river.

Alex won nearly 2 million dollars for his efforts, taking home a prize of $1,852,721.

John Kalmar Busts Out in 5th - WSOP 2007

Breaking News! Two WSOP final table players went all in, and Jerry Yang was not involved! The all in moment involved John Kalmar of the United Kingdom, and Raymond Rahme of South Africa.

Kalmar pushed his stack all in preflop, and was called by Rahme, who showed the same hand Yang took out Khan with, pocket jacks.

The fans went crazy, each shouting for their chosen player, the jacks held, and the Rahme fans raised the roof!

Kalmar didn't do to bad either though, being one of the final five at the World Series of Poker final table, he is the first to cash for more than one million dollars, taking home a total prize of $1,255,069. That win ought to make entry into the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) this September a pretty easy choice.

"It was so great," Childs said minutes after his elimination "The best day of my life is when I got married, and this is probably the second."

Childs was staked into the WSOP by his father, Bill who joined him from the rail at the event, not a bad investment at all.

Yang Still at it, Eliminates Hevad Rain Khan from the 2007 WSOP

Khan's exit from the World Series of Poker began when he pushed a $3 million chip bet into the pot from the small blind, Yang called. Rain Khan went all in .. in the dark, All in pre-flop, in the dark, at the World Series of Poker final table.

Khan pushed the remainder of his chips into the pot, before the flop even fell onto the table.

The Flop:

4 Spades

Yang called the all in bet, and flipped over pocket jacks. Khan turned over his cards, showing the Ace of Spades and the Queen of Diamonds. Two overs it could have been worse.

The turn and river were both uneventful for the players, a 4 of clubs for the turn, a 3 of spades on the river, there was no screaming, piggy back rides for chairs, or invisible basketball games to follow this hand.

Second Lee Busts out of the WSOP

Lee Childs met the poker playing wrath of Jerry Yang. Jerry "The Juggernaut" Yang eliminated Childs in 7th place, this is the third player Yang has sent packing since the final table commenced, just 2 and a half hours ago.

Yang has played his large chip lead to the fullest, raising nearly every hand, calling nearly everything preflop.

In Child's last hand for the 2007 World Series of Poker, Childs bet out $720,000, moved was there, ready and waiting to move all in. Childs thought it over for some time, a little under 5 minutes in fact.

Holding the King of Hearts and the Jack of Clubs, Childs made the call, finding with relief I'm sure, that he had Yang dominated! Yang showed the Jack and Eight of spades. The flop came blank for both players, but brought Childs a runner runner flush option.

The Flop:

The turn, an 8 of clubs, bringing Yang a pair of eights, and Childs a flush draw with two over cards to Yang's pair. Any king, any jack, any club, would bring Childs a double up through Yang, any other card, brings him a cash prize of $705,229 and a spot on the rail.


The dealer turned over the 9 of diamonds, sending Childs on his way out of the 2007 Milwaukee's Best World Series of Poker.

WSOP Chipleader First to Bust Out of Final Table

Hilm, who began his poker play at the WSOP final table was the first to bust out of the World Series of Poker Main Event Final Table. In less than two hours, Philip Hilm was eaten alive by the strong aggressive poker play of Jerry Yang.

The other WSOP final table players chose to stay tight, and let Yang do the work, and he did, pushing all in over and over again, taking down huge pots, and chipping away at the big stack brought to the table by Hilm.

Hilm decided to push back, can't have a monster every hand right? Only this time he did.

Yang bet out 1 million in WSOP tournament chips, Hilm and only Hilm called.

The flop:

Hilm checks, Yang bets 2 million. Hilm thinks his decision over for a minute, and then he calls.

The turn brought the 2 of hearts, Hilm checks again, Yang bets out 4 Million tournament chips, Hilm re-raises, all in.

With just a moments thought, Yang called, and turned over the ace of diamonds, and the king of spades. Hilm was definitely the dog, with just a pair of fives (8d/5d), and a flush draw. Hilm needed another 5, an eight for two pair, or any diamond to make a flush.

In the words of many poker players, "He had outs". The rail was quiet, the dealer paused a moment, and then flipped over both men's fate, the six of clubs, no help to Hilm, Yangs kings held up, and living proof, big slick can win. Hilm was eliminated from the WSOP in 9th place, with a total cash prize of $525,934. This hand left Yang with nearly a third of the remaining chips in play, a total of $45 million.

The next player to bust will take home $585,699.

Lee Watkinson Busts out of WSOP 2007

Lee Watkinson, one of Bodogs top picks for this years World Series of Poker Main Event tournament, has busted out of the tournament. Jerry Yang, amateur poker player who was originally given 9 to 1 odds by Bodog.com dominated Watkinson's A 7 with his own A 9. Watkinson sat quietly for a moment before deciding whether to push his chips all in with the hand, after about a four minute wait, Yang called him.

The flop came blank for both poker players, 2/4/6, followed by a king, leaving Watkinson needing a seven and only a seven to win on the river. The river came jack, eliminating Lee Watkinson, who owns a chimpanzee rescue camp for chimps retired from laboratory testing in 8th place, for a WSOP main event win of $585,699. The original buy in to the WSOP main event is $10,000, not a bad net profit at all.

The last player to bust out of the tournament before payday, or before all players left become cash prize winners, is known as the "Bubble boy", the last player left in the game that will go home without a cash prize. PokerStars Luanches Asia Pacific Poker Tour

PokerStars announced today in a press release the launch of Asia Pacific's first ever poker tour, the PokerStars APPT. The APPT will span from Australia to Kra and will attract world class poker players, bringing poker action to some of the most exotic and luxurious casinos and gambling destinations in the area.

As put by Sarne Lightman, co-founder of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour, "One of the most exciting aspects of being a poker player is the incredible travel opportunities it offers,” Lightman went on to explain that PokerStars sends poker players on trips to events located throughout Europe, the United States, and the Caribbean. "The launch of the PokerStars APPT brings a whole new dimension to poker in Asia and marks poker’s emergence into a truly global sport.”

The opening event for the Asia Pacific Poker tour will be held August 23rd 2007 through the 26th at Casino Manila, a 5 star Hyatt Hotel located in the Philippines. The second APPT event is scheduled to commence on the 27th of September, at the Sheraton Walkerhill hotel and Casino, located in Seoul, South Korea, that event will continue through the 30th of September.

Both events will be televised poker tournaments, and are the first of their kind in each of the countries mentioned. There are at least 3 more events planned for 2007 that will be announced later in the year.

The final event of the year will be held in December, with the Grand Final, which will be located in StarCity Casino in Sydney Australia, the buyin will be AUD6,300 (or approximately $5,000) is set to be held in the the casinos' fabulous poker room, overlooking the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Suit Filed Against Washington, Online Poker Ban 'Unconstitutional'

Last year, Washington State passed a law (SB 6613) that made online gambling a Class C Felony crime. Attorney Lee Rousso of Renton, Washington, alleges the bill to be unconstitutional and filed a suit against the state on Friday.

The lawsuit accuses SB 6613 of violating the Constitution's Commerce Clause and was enacted merely to benefit the 'brick and mortar'

establishments of the state. The lawsuit was accompanied by the release statement, "Most state attempts to regulate the internet run afoul of the Commerce Clause, and Washington's law, which was passed to protect the state's brick-and-mortar casinos from otherwise legal out-of-state competition, should be no exception."

Rousso is a veteran poker player and the Poker Player Alliance's representative in Washington State. He told a Seattle newspaper he believed his challenging of the law, the first so far, could very well be the last, "I think my chances are darn good."

Among Rousso's key points in the lawsuit, it specifically alleges State Senator Margarita Prentice, the writer of the original bill, accepted contributions from casinos in Washington, and that those casinos "were the intended and/or actual beneficiaries of SB 6613."

If declaratory judgment is laid down against the bill, the outcome Rousso is hopeful for, SB 6613 would become void and unenforceable. The Washington Gambling Commission chose not to provide a statement on the matter until the lawsuit could be reviewed by commission lawyers.

Viva Las Vegas!

Well we're off! Off to Las Vegas! We'll be there for opening day of the WSOP main event, as well as for the Calvin Ayre Auditions! We have plane tickets, we have a room, a cheap one, but a room none the less.

We're staying at a little hotel in Vegas called Arizona Charlies, there's three girls, and dad, had to bring someone along to keep us in line didn't we :P

Katja Thater 2nd Woman Ever to win WSOP Non Exclusive Bracelet!

Katja Thater left the WSOP Razz Event with a new title - Second Woman ever to win a Non-Exclusive Bracelet Event. A woman is guaranteed to win at least one bracelet every year. Some one has to win the ladies event. This year Katja Thater has established another notch for women in the world of poker, by taking the bracelet in this non-exclusive event. The only woman to accomplish this before her was Annie Duke in 2004..

Players were in game until 4 a.m. on day one, and 3 a.m. on day two during one of the longest tournaments of the series. The final eight voted to return on day three to finish the tournament, originally scheduled as a two-day event.

The chip counts stood as follow when the final table opened:

1- O'Neil Longson with $385,500
2- St. Jean with $171,000
3- Denny Axel with $123,000
4- Katja Thater with $117,500
5- Paul "Eskimo" Clark with $88,500
6- Mark Vos with $84,500
7- Thomas Daubert with $54,500
8- Men "The Master" Nguyen with $35,000

The two short stacks, Daubert and Nguyen, traded places in the chip counts until Thater knocked both out on the same hand. Daubert finished in eighth place, and Nguyen moved up, based on starting chip count, to finish in seventh place. The next busted player was Vos, in sixth place, when his 9 low was undercut by Clark's 8 low. Nguyen and Vos were keeping the table light and laid back, so when they were both out, the game became more serious. Thater also knocked out the fifth place Axel when the sixth and seventh streets were paired against his hand.

Paul Clark overcame tremendous obstacles to make this final table. It was only days earlier that he had a stroke, and still entered the poker game with 340 other players to finish in the top 4. To see ‘Eskimo' return so quickly was a relief for the poker world as a whole.

Longson came in as the chip leader but could not capture another bracelet. After Longson was eliminated in third place, Thater and St. Jean were set up for heads-up play. After many hands back and forth Katja Thater finally overcame Larry St. Jean with 8-5-4-3-2. This made WSOP history, and ripples across the whole event.

Blair Rodman, Pro Gambler and Author Wins WSOP Bracelet!

Blair Rodman, professional gambler and author wins bracelet through a tough and varied sea of competitors.

In Las Vegas the winner of the $2,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’em championship was Blair Rodman, professional gambler and author. This is his first WSOP win. The 53 year old has been playing in the tournament since 1982.

Rodman co-authored the popular book, "Kill Phil" which explains counterstrategies designed to beat the best poker players in the world. Rodman is also active on the Ultimate Blackjack Tour, a televised "21" tournament.

Blair Rodman just about found himself out of WSOP. He was knocked out of the Omaha High Low from the previous date. He almost skipped the next day’s event because he was exhausted. "I got eliminated on late on the second day in Omaha," Rodman explained in a post-tournament interview. "I almost didn't play (in this tournament). If I would not have been knocked out of that Omaha High-Low event, I would not have been here. So, I guess getting busted in that event was a good thing!"

When the game came down to the final nine, Rodman was sixth in the chips stacks. With skill, he managed to survive and eventually took a decisive chip. The heads up play against Amato Galasso, a first time live event player, lasted for three hours. Through a series of see saw wins leaving Rodman to win the last pot of the night.

In his first poker tournament, Galasso won $448,808, a fantastic finish for a newbie to the world of live tournament poker.

A number of other notable events occurred in this game. Included in this Anna Wroblewski finished fourth, as the only the 6th women to make a final table appearance in an open event for the 2007 World Series. Katja Thater is still the only woman to win a gold bracelet this year in an open event.

In 9th place Mark McKibben, who entered the competition after winning a jackpot slots machine on this, his first visit to Las Vegas. The $2000 entry fee was posted with the winnings, and he continued deep into the game to finish with $42,655. That’s a vacation pay out many could enjoy.

T.J. Cloutier, a powerhouse in poker, finished in 17th place. He has won 54 WSOP cash payouts during his lifetime, including this match. This ranks him right behind Men Nguyen and Phil Hellmuth.

Even the entertainment industry did well in this match up. Jennifer Tilly, the oscar-nominated actress finished in 30th place. Rene Angelil, husband and manager of superstar entertainer Celine Dion, took 173rd place.

Many previous gold bracelet winners who finished in the top of this match up were – David Chiu (61), Rafe Furst (62), John Spadavecchia (107), Kirk Morrison (111), and James Mackey (138).

As the events approach their finish for the 2007 World Series, there have been new additions to the official ‘WSOP Millionaires Club”. Currently there are 88 players who have won each an excess of $1 million in lifetime earnings at the WSOP. The newest members to join this exceptional group of player include: Thor Hansen, Jeffrey Lisandro, Burt Boutin, Freddy Deeb, Bruno Fitoussi, Fred Goldberg, Hans Lund, Tony Ma, William Thorsen and David Singer. This is an accomplishment many will strive for in their tournament career ventures.
